PHILIPPINE EAGLE OWLS AT ANGONO, RIZAL | e-BON

The site of the Angono Petroglyphs is recently attracting tourists not only because of the oldest known work of art in the Philippines but because of the family of owl living on the site where the 3000BC work of art is located.

PHILIPPINE EAGLE OWLS AT ANGONO, RIZAL | e-BON:

"WBCP MEMBER VINCENT LAO WRITES ABOUT HOW HE CAME TO DISCOVER ANOTHER PHILIPPINE EAGLE OWL FAMILY, THIS TIME IN ANGONO INSTEAD OF BALARA AND MOST AMAZING OF ALL — VIEWABLE IN THE DAYTIME!

OWLING AT ANGONO
by Vincent Lao

I had never heard of the Angono Petroglyph in Binangonan, Rizal before. I learned about the site from a travel blog. With the limited directions available online, I was not surprised that only a few people knew of the place. But this also meant that it was a good place for birds!

My first visit to the site gave me an impression that it might be a good place for hiking. On my second visit, I was told that there were some owls in the area. It was during my third visit that I actually saw an owl in the wild for the first time. The owl was easy to identify because I had seen some pictures of the Philippine Eagle Owl family in Balara reported by another birder a few weeks ago. This owl seemed cooperative enough while I was taking shot after shot with my digiscope setup. It even stared at me as if to say “Go ahead, take your best shot!” or probably just gauging whether or not I was a threat."

Doreen, the consummate teacher | Inquirer Opinion

Maraming Salamat! Doreen Fernandez.

Doreen, the consummate teacher | Inquirer Opinion:

"Oh, to be so loved by one’s students that they would remember, not the drudgery of writing and learning, but the memorable experiences deliberately planned for them, all to be used as material for writing. She took them to trips to nearby Angono for its rich folk and popular culture. When the first McDonald’s first opened in downtown Manila, she took her freshman class there and placed an order of 24 of the following: burgers, fries, apple pies, fizzy drinks—all to discuss, analyze, savor, and write about in a writing exercise back in the classroom. Others cannot forget being led to discover how to open a fish head and its 13 distinct flavors. Another one said he never thought he was any good as a writer until she typed all his poems and photocopied them for the class to appreciate. One considers her the best single teacher he ever had. “She was our excuse to gush,” another one said unabashedly."

The prince and the poet: Botong and the ultimate collector - The Philippine Star » Lifestyle Features » Arts and Culture

"MANILA, Philippines - Manila in the 1950s was, quite simply, another time and another place. Glittering, glamorous, Manila was part Vegas, part L.A. Confidential, peopled by hardy entrepreneurs, some say, even buccaneers, who had walked through the flames of World War II and triumphed.

The country was bursting with optimism as well as a steadfast Filipino pride. The future was there for the taking. Men were making matches made in heaven with Miss Universe, couturiers like Ramon Valera and Salvacion “Slim” Lim were confecting visions fit for the Paris runways, and a revolving-door of celebrities from Tyrone Power, Gregory Peck (think Roman Holiday!), Orson Welles, to William Randolph Hearst and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor populated the Manila society pages, while the local business aristocracy would routinely make it to Time Magazine. Sleek skyscrapers, housing nightclubs, theaters, as well as bustling multinational offices, jostled side by side to fill the skyline."
